How could we achieve consensus and make rational choices on social affairs about science and technology? This is our seminar's major concern. We approach this problem from philosophical viewpoints. Critically evaluating such methods as probabilistic risk assessment, social constructionism, or some other methods adopted in applied ethics, we try to find out what could be appropriate criteria for our rational judge-ments. Also, core topics in philosophy of science, such as issues concerning causality, induction, and spacetime are our concern as well.

Under Construction

How can we communicate facts and their meaning in science and technology to the wider public? The History of Science Unit is working on Issues that arise in the realm of science and society from the standpoint of History of Science or Science and Technology Studies. We have also started researching the history of science film.

Exhibitions and workshops conducted by museum are avenues of commu-nication between museum and people. Observing activities and conducting workshops such as science cafe will educate and inspire curators, educators, and museum fans to offer constructive criticism.

Science Communication Course
Science communication is currently a contentious issue. On the one hand, it is said that we need better communication to promote the under-standing of scientific research, including its meaning and purpose among the public. Awareness is necessary to draw attention to scientific subjects and literacy. On the other hand, researchers also need to cultivate their social literacy to be aware of public needs toward scientific research and scientists, and to construct a trusting relationship with society.
Our science communication course was established in response to these social needs. Teachers in extensive areas such as science communication,
science education, history of science, ethics of science and technology, and museology, are guiding students' research on issues in the communication of science and technology. Students can also take a course in the Communicators in Science and Technology Education Program (CoSTEP).
